Favor money over sport: golf in the hot seat! – DH/Sports+

Golfer Thomas Pieters is a textbook case. While a high-level career on the classic circuits beckoned to him, the Antwerp champion succumbed to the call of the LIV, a dissident circuit financed by a Saudi sovereign fund. Somehow, like many other mega stars of the greens, he preferred the nebulous petrodollars of an artificial League to the transparent dollars of conventional tournaments. And he clearly favored the financial aspect over the sporting aspect.

Due to lack of recognition by official golf authorities, the LIV does not award any good points. Dropped in the rankings, Pieters no longer has access to the Grand Slam tournaments or the Olympic Games. His rebellious choice is debated in the lounges of cozy clubhouses where tradition is sealed in stone. But should we throw stones at him? Can we blame a citizen for electing the employer who offers him the best contract? In less than two years on this circuit, Pieters has already secured his future and that of several generations. If there is a case to be brought, it is rather against the business system invented by certain countries in the Middle East and which is on the verge of turning world sport upside down. Just a quick trip to Belgium and thanks to an invitation, TP is participating this week in the Soudal Open near Antwerp. A passage into real life with a tournament which distributes barely 2.5 million dollars!
