The former champion ofCFUCharles Oliveira, had the opportunity during his rich professional MMA career to share the octagon with the main protagonists of this week's UFC 302 event!
At the UFC 269 event, again as champion, Oliveira defeated Dustin Poirier by submission (RNC) in the third round and thus defended the title of the lightweight category for the first time. Just a year later, more precisely during the UFC 280 event, Oliveira was defeated by Islam Makhachev. Makhachev won the Brazilian fighter by submission (Arm Triangle) in the second round and thus took the place of lightweight champion, where he remains today!
As he had the opportunity to fight against both fighters, it's interesting to hear Oliveira's opinion and see who he considers to be the winner of this match.
„Any batter faced by Islam will meet the same fate, Makhachev will ground him and have a better chance of winning. However, we are talking about MMA, one blow can turn everything around and definitely bring you victory.”, Oliveira began before continuing:
“Dustin Poirier proved it in his last fight, he has proven it many times. He has heavy hands and hits hard, so he can definitely knock him out, but I think Islam will remain the champion.”
Besides the mentioned fight, he also commented on a potential match between Islam and Oliveira's latest opponent, Arman Tsarukyan. After his defeat against Tsarukyan, by split decision of the judges, the Brazilian fighter does not, however, see Arman as a threat for the Dagestan champion.
“Arman is the type of guy who puts you on the ground and keeps you there all the time,” Oliveira said before adding: “He doesn’t have a chance. This is not a fight he can win. Of course, I just said that and I can't take back my words, but we're talking about MMA, and it's a very unpredictable sport. A man closes his eyes and throws a punch, he hits you, you are knocked out. He throws a kick, you try a takedown and you end up knocked out. MMA is unpredictable, but I think Islam is much more experienced, more focused, hungrier and much stronger than Arman.”
