Air New Zealand CEO Greg Foran His flight attendant union contract may be in violation of the opportunity clause By having the cabin crew take over the responsibility of serving drinks to passengers on a flight from Auckland to Tokyo. (I'm a kid, I'm a kid.)

He was trying to make up for the flight to be diverted – to pick him up, along with a trade delegation of 30 New Zealand business leaders, government officials and media.

The group was traveling to Tokyo on a New Zealand military 757 that required a refueling stop en route. While on the ground in Papua New Guinea, the aircraft “blow two fuses” which restricted it to low altitude flying.

The country's prime minister caught a commercial flight to Hong Kong connecting Tokyo, while everyone else waited overnight. The next day the military 757 flew from Port Moresby to Brisbane at a low altitude of about 1,300 miles.

It was there that CEO Foran diverted New Zealand Flight 99 from Auckland to Tokyo Narita to pick up his party. Once aboard the Boeing 787, he announced an apology to passengers for the unexpected stop. He and the company's board chair helped out with the beverage cart. And they sat in economy. He proposed,

It just worked out that thing. This added about two hours to people's journey so they would arrive in Narita a few hours later than they normally would and we have enough seats on the plane.

However, in his statement, the passengers of Air New Zealand Flight 99 were not compensated.
