Former Greek coast guard makes unguarded comments about migrants to BBC


A new BBC documentary investigates the behavior of the Greek coastguard.

We showed footage of 12 people being loaded onto a Greek coastguard boat, and then released in a dinghy, to former senior Greek coastguard officer Dimitris Baltaks.

During the interview, he refused to speculate about what the footage showed – denying before our conversation that the Greek coastguard had ever done anything illegal. But during the break, he was recorded making unsafe comments in Greek.

In a statement, the Greek Coast Guard strongly rejected all allegations of illegal activity. They said they work tirelessly with utmost professionalism, strong sense of responsibility and respect for human life and fundamental rights.s
