Meg Ryan has shared a tribute to the late Rob Reiner, who directed her in the beloved romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally. Reiner was discovered deceased alongside his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, at their home in Los Angeles over the weekend. “Oh how we will miss this man…” Ryan posted on Instagram, along with a photograph of the two together. “Thank you, Rob and Michelle [sic], for believing in true love, fairy tales, and laughter. Thank you for your faith in the goodness in people, and for your deep love of our nation.”Reiner’s son Nick, 32, faces two charges of first-degree murder and appeared in court today. He is currently held without bail. Reports indicate that Reiner’s daughter Romy discovered her father’s body. “I have to believe that their story will not conclude with this unbearable tragedy, that some good might arise, and some awareness might be elevated,” Ryan continued in her post. “I don’t know, but I suspect they would wish for something hopeful and humane, something that leads us to a deeper understanding of each other and to some peace.”Reiner’s children Jake and Romy released a statement to People today. “Words cannot adequately express the unimaginable anguish we endure every moment of the day,” they stated. “The terrible and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is a sorrow that no one should experience. They were not only our parents; they were our closest friends.”Ryan’s co-star, Billy Crystal, also honored Reiner with a statement shared yesterday, alongside others including Larry David, Martin Short, and Albert Brooks. “His comedic skill was unmatched, his passion for perfecting dialogue was extraordinary, and his ability to enhance the edge of a drama was simply refined,” it read. “For the actors, he adored them. For the writers, he elevated their work. His greatest gift was liberty. If you had an idea, he listened and welcomed you into the creative process. They always felt part of a collaborative team. Being in his care as a filmmaker was a privilege, but that is just part of his legacy.”When Harry Met Sally was a remarkable success both critically and commercially in 1989, grossing over $93 million at the box office and earning Nora Ephron an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.Rob Reiner first met Michele Singer Reiner during the filming. The couple was introduced by Barry Sonnenfeld, a director and friend. “I’ll never forget it,” he told the New York Times. “It was a scene on a stoop in front of a brownstone. Billy and Meg are in the midst of an argument. And I glance over and see this girl, and whoo! I was instantly attracted. And Barry says, ‘That’s Michele.’ I responded, ‘That’s Michele?’”He further stated: “She has been instrumental in my development. The things I discuss, how women make you see what’s essential, she has exemplified for me.”The couple was married for 36 years.Reiner’s filmography also encompasses Misery, Stand by Me, and The Princess Bride.
