Tunisia 3-1 Uganda: Analysis, outcome and goals as Carthage Eagles sail to initial AFCON victory

It was a straightforward success for the champions from 2004.

Elias Achouri netted twice as Tunisia secured a 3-1 victory over Uganda in their first Africa Cup of Nations match in Rabat.

Although they qualified for the 2026 World Cup undefeated and without conceding any goals, Tunisia is not viewed as one of the top favorites for the championship.

However, the 2004 champions set a strong precedent amidst heavy rain in their opening Group C match, with Achouri being the standout performer.

Ellyes Skhiri opened the scoring for Tunisia in the 10th minute, followed by Achouri’s goals on either side of half-time, ensuring a comfortable win before Denis Omedi brought some respectability to the scoreline for Uganda.

Tunisia glides to victory

Warning signs were evident early on for Uganda, as Hazem Mastouri shot wide from close range following splendid play on the left from Hannibal Mejbri.

Mejbri’s cross was crucial as Tunisia took the lead; his ball to the far post was tucked away by Skhiri, allowing Tunisia to maintain dominance subsequently.

Tunisia had to wait another half-hour to extend their lead, but when they made it 2-0, it was in impressive fashion, with Achouri meeting Ali Abdi’s pull back with a brilliant side-foot volley.

The rain eased in the second half, yet Tunisia did not relent, securing the victory in the 64th minute when Achouri finished on the rebound after Abdi’s attempt was saved by Salim Magoola.

Substitute Omedi managed to pull one back late for Uganda with a deflected shot, offering the Cranes a brief moment of joy, although it was merely a consolation.

Tunisia rises to the top of Group C, and will next encounter Nigeria on December 27 in what is expected to be a decisive clash for the group.
