Fast-bowling coach Mahbub Ali Zaki passes away from heart attack before BPL match

Mahbub Ali Zaki, a well-respected fast-bowling coach in Bangladesh, passed away on Saturday after experiencing a heart attack prior to the Dhaka Capitals’ BPL match against Rajshahi Warriors at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. Zaki, who served as the assistant coach for the Capitals, fell while participating in pre-match activities. He was transported to a hospital, where he was declared dead shortly thereafter. He was 59. The match proceeded as planned, with players, coaches, and match officials observing a minute’s silence in honor of Zaki. The BCB, where Zaki had been employed for the last 17 years, shared on social media: “After his playing career, Mahbub Ali Zaki committed himself to coaching and player development. He joined the BCB in 2008 as a High Performance coach and made a meaningful impact on the advancement of pace bowling in the nation through his efforts.” Zaki specialized in pace bowling within the BCB’s game development sector. He first gained recognition for his coaching of Taskin Ahmed in 2016 when the bowler faced scrutiny over an illegal bowling action. Zaki collaborated closely with numerous fast bowlers in the country and coordinated with various international bowling coaches who worked with the Bangladesh team. A friendly personality, Zaki aimed to establish a fast-bowling academy in Bangladesh, akin to the MRF Pace Foundation in India. During his playing career, Zaki represented Comilla district in the National Cricket Championship and also played for Abahani Limited, the most successful club in the Dhaka Premier League.
