Gabriela Timar, a Romanian-born fighter now based in Switzerland, withstood the relentless aggression of Japan’s Marina Loreto to claim the vacant WBO Atomweight (102 lbs) championship in Berne, Switzerland on Friday, Boxing Day. The taller southpaw, Timar, utilized a significant amount of lateral movement to evade Loreto’s strikes while delivering her own counterattacks. In the sixth round, Loreto delivered a powerful right that left Timar’s face severely marked for the remainder of the contest. The pain was evident as Timar actually looked to referee Diana Drews Milani and raised her glove to her face, seemingly indicating her discomfort. However, Loreto was unable to take advantage of this moment. At the start of the tenth and final round, it appeared that Loreto was hurt as she stumbled back from a left hand thrown by Timar. In fact, Timar had stepped on Loreto’s left foot with her right, limiting Loreto’s ability to step back to evade the punch. There were no knockdowns during the bout, which went the full ten rounds. The final scores were 95-95, 97-93, and 98-92, resulting in a majority decision in favor of Timar. Loreto’s husband, a former IBO light flyweight champion, expressed disbelief and attempted to rally the audience, asserting that his fighter and wife was the rightful victor. Timar’s record improves to 16-2, 3 KOs, while Loreto suffers her first defeat, bringing her to 8-1-2.
