‘A new fire has been lit’: Keyshawn Davis discusses return bout versus Jamaine Ortiz

As Keyshawn Davis prepares to make his comeback from a hiatus in a January 31 showdown against Jamaine Ortiz on the undercard of Teofimo Lopez vs Shakur Stevenson, he shares his thoughts with Ring Magazine’s panel regarding the significance of this fight and his aspirations for the future. Below are some highlights from his remarks, with the complete interview accessible via the link at the top. Keyshawn on feeling reinvigorated for the clash with Jamaine Ortiz “A fresh motivation has ignited. I gained a tremendous amount of insight during my time off, understanding a lot about myself, the individuals I was collaborating with, my family, and much more. So, this represents a second opportunity for me, truly. I’m extremely fortunate to have a second chance, especially after the break, and I’m enthusiastic and prepared.” “I believe that every great has gone through a moment of adversity, and I think this is my moment where I’m about to rewrite my narrative…” On which opponent will genuinely elevate his status “All I need to do is continue my current course, man… I view the January 31 fight as significant. Jamaine Ortiz has faced Lomachenko, you know, he has fought Teofimo, and he has competed on much larger stages than I have, to be honest. Even though I believe I might hold a larger name, that’s not what counts. That guy can really, really fight… When I perform against him, it will be indisputable.” On his reluctance to face Shakur Stevenson even though they are now in the same weight category “Listen, I’m 26 years old, I observe the boxing scene. I know Shakur is likely to become the 140 champ, and that’s ‘my division’ — I believe boxing belongs to me. I think I have the freedom to pursue whatever I aspire to do. And I know my goal after defeating Jamaine is to move up to 147 and claim a title there.” On the progress of training since parting ways with Brian McIntyre (a topic both have yet to address) “Let me tell you, since August, I’ve been training consistently. I’ve been prepared. I just required a date.” On his eagerness to face Richardson Hitchins “Let me outline the plan because I genuinely feel this is what’s going to occur… After I overcome Jamaine Ortiz, God willing, I plan to move up to 147 and become champion there. Then I will defend that title against someone in the 147 division.”
