Fernando Sabatini reports that the WBA has officially promoted former interim super middleweight champion Jose Armando Resendiz to take the place of the exiting Terence Crawford, mandating “Toro” to compete against mandatory challenger Bektemir Melikuziev in the process. Resendiz (16-2, 11 KO), a veteran middleweight whose most notable victory was over the diminished Jarrett Hurd, thwarted PBC’s longstanding strategy to pit Caleb Plant against Jermall Charlo by outsmarting and outmuscling “Sweethands” for the title in May. He can now proudly call himself a world champion, and while it’s tempting to dismiss him as a one-off, it’s essential to keep in mind that he is only 26 and has participated in fewer than 20 professional fights. There’s every reason to believe he might be developing later than most.
