IPL team KKR part ways with Mustafizur following BCCI directive

The Kolkata Knight Riders, a franchise in the Indian Premier League, have let go of Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman after receiving an order from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The BCCI did not specify the reasons behind their request, but it coincides with heightened tensions between India and neighboring Bangladesh. Recently, a Hindu man in predominantly Muslim Bangladesh was accused of blasphemy and killed by a mob, triggering protests from Hindu nationalist groups in India. Anti-India feelings in Bangladesh have intensified since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina sought refuge there in 2024. Despite multiple requests, India has refused to facilitate her return, leading to violent demonstrations following the killing of prominent student leader Sharif Osman Hadi in Bangladesh. “Considering the ongoing situations prevalent, the BCCI has directed the Kolkata Knight Riders to release one of their players, Mustafizur Rahman from Bangladesh,” commented BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia. “They may request a replacement if necessary. The BCCI will accommodate a replacement player upon request.”
