Nottingham Forest coach requires stitches after overenthusiastic goal celebration

Nottingham Forest commenced the 2025/26 season impressively with a commanding 3-1 victory against Brentford at the City Ground. Unfortunately for Forest’s goalkeeping coach Rui Barbosa, the day turned sour – though he might have put it out of his mind. After Chris Wood scored the first goal just five minutes into the game, Barbosa celebrated exuberantly, leaping from his seat – only to collide his head forcefully with the dugout, resulting in significant bleeding. The Portuguese coach was swiftly attended to by medical staff, with Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo disclosing post-match that Barbosa required stitches to mend a substantial cut on his head. “He has six stitches!” Santo remarked. “It was a nasty one. A bad one. He was dizzy.” Chris Wood struck the opening goal just five minutes against Brentford. / Clive Mason/GettyImages As for the remainder of the game – which saw Forest leading 3-0 by half-time due to a double from Wood and a spectacular diving header from new summer signing Dan Ndoye – Santo expressed his excitement without reservation. “I am delighted,” he stated after the match. “The way we started the game was amazing. We played well, we dominated, we controlled the goal in the first five minutes that set the tone for the team and energized the stadium.” One thing is for certain: Barbosa certainly felt that energy – and the sharp corner of the dugout – more than anyone else did.
