‘I’m going to bring that fastball’: Keith Thurman aims to display his power against Sebastian Fundora

Keith Thurman is still poised to receive his opportunity at WBC super welterweight champion Sebastian Fundora, despite the initial delay of the fight due to an injury sustained by Fundora. In this interview with Ring Magazine, Thurman expresses his continued anticipation for the bout, even though a new date has yet to be confirmed. He suggests that an official announcement regarding the rescheduled fight is expected in the coming weeks, and he aims to demonstrate a return to his earlier fighting form in this match—though he later hesitates on the specific style he plans to adopt. Thurman on facing Fundora“Ya’ll don’t get how much I cherish the sport, man. The sole reason I’m here, the only thing that took me to this point, is my genuine love and commitment to boxing, man…There’s nothing comparable to being in the ring, baby. And, you know, I want to compete against the best, I want to push my limits…I just aim to create history and prove that real, great fighters cannot be kept from becoming champions again. That’s what drives me.”On the delay of the fight and the expected announcement of a new date“I’m hoping to provide an update within 10 days to two weeks at most. They’ve mentioned something to me, but you know how this sport operates. I take it lightly, but it encourages me to remain active and keep hitting the gym. I had a solid training session this morning, so I’m eager for this announcement. “You’re going to witness that man hit the canvas once again, like he has in his past fights. I’m coming to deliver the big power. And, you know, power lasts the longest. I’ve always been known for my power punches, and while I was focusing on finesse and boxing with my footwork—that was entertaining, but I’m over that. So I’m going back to landing the big shots…I’m going to bring that fastball for you.”On how he plans to avoid being overwhelmed by Fundora“Remember B-Hop? Recall what B-Hop accomplished? You simply need to approach things with intelligence, not brute force. When you possess knowledge and wisdom, you should make use of it. Why would I engage in behaviors better suited for a younger fighter when I can remain composed in the pocket? If he isn’t pressing the attack, I won’t either. We adapt during bouts, right? “It’s about refining those moments so you’re not always forced to dance around the ring. But you’d be surprised. These legs are still full of vigor. I still have plenty of mobility, and I aim to display it—because a moving target is hard to strike. Thankfully, I still retain some agility; however, my approach has certainly changed with age, and I believe we can still achieve remarkable results and reclaim the world championship. “I’ve got a whole arsenal of strategies, man. The hardest aspect of fighting against Keith Thurman is that they frequently undervalue how crafty I can be. And I enjoy that. They attempt to categorize you…but with that lateral movement from my HBO days, and even during my time in Australia, I put Brock Jarvis to the test. I take pleasure in challenging fighters…and when they struggle to keep pace with my movement, that’s when I find that One Time, that’s when I locate those openings, and that’s what I mean by seizing moments. “To me, Fundora resembles more of a challenging obstacle course. He’s youthful and powerful, but fundamentally, I see numerous errors, I observe many openings like Swiss cheese…It takes an experienced fighter like me to determine if these young contenders are truly the next great ones or not.”
