Mo Salah: AFCON 2025 fixtures, schedule for Egypt and Liverpool forward at Africa Cup of Nations
With his future at Liverpool in question, Mohamed Salah is currently representing Egypt at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The 33-year-old stands out as one of the prominent athletes in the tournament in Morocco, where the Pharaohs were viewed as strong candidates for victory before the tournament began.
Egypt boasts the record for the most AFCON titles, having secured the trophy seven times, but they were eliminated in the last-16 of the previous edition in 2023 held in Ivory Coast.
Here’s a summary of Mo Salah’s upcoming matches and AFCON record, along with a projection for his return to club duty.
Mo Salah: Egypt AFCON fixtures, schedule
All three of Egypt’s group matches were conducted in Agadir, kicking off against Zimbabwe on December 22.
They advanced to the last 16 thanks to Salah’s successful penalty against South Africa and concluded the group stage by resting Salah and Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush during a draw with Angola.

When will Mohamed Salah return from AFCON?
The earliest time Salah can rejoin Liverpool is post Egypt’s last-16 match on Monday, January 5.
If they face a quarter-final exit, that would be on the 10th, whereas their last game will take place on January 17 if eliminated in the semi-finals or January 18 if they make it to the final.
Liverpool Premier League fixtures: When could Salah play?
The next match Salah might realistically be able to partake in is Liverpool’s home fixture against Burnley on January 17 (15:00 /10:00 / 07:00), but he would likely miss that if Egypt makes it to the semi-finals.
He might also sit out the away game against Marseille in Champions League on January 21 (20:00 GMT / 15:00 ET / 12:00 PT) if Egypt is still competing in the semi-finals.
Should Egypt reach the final, the most probable date for Salah’s return to Liverpool would be January 24 against Bournemouth (17:30 GMT / 12:30 ET / 09:30 PT), assuming he doesn’t have any injuries and doesn’t need additional recovery time.
They then host Qarabag in the Champions League on January 28 (20:00 GMT / 15:00 ET / 12:00 PT).
Is Mohamed Salah leaving Liverpool?
Salah’s involvement in AFCON could provide a respite for both the player and Liverpool following the reigning Premier League champions’ rough start, which was worsened by negative comments from their star player.
After not starting in four consecutive matches, Salah expressed feeling “thrown under the bus” and indicated a rift with manager Arne Slot after a 3-3 draw at Leeds United on December 6.
Liverpool omitted Salah from their lineup for their next match, a 1-0 victory over Inter in the Champions League, but the situation seemed to improve following talks between Slot and Salah, who came off the bench to assist in Hugo Ekitike’s second goal during a 2-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion on December 13.
That match remains Salah’s last in a Liverpool career that entails 250 goals across 420 appearances.
Slot’s squad is unbeaten since Salah was dropped following a 4-1 home defeat to PSV in European competition.
When performing at his peak, Salah provides Liverpool with one of the top forwards in Premier League history, and if the Saudi Pro League expresses interest this January, the club’s asking price is likely to be higher if he no longer has conflicts with them.
British-record £125 million signing Alexander Isak and £79m France forward Ekitike were part of Liverpool’s attacking lineup during their impressive win in Milan, showcasing Slot’s wealth of options at the front.

Has Mohamed Salah won AFCON?
Salah has yet to claim an AFCON title, although he played a crucial role in leading Egypt to the finals of the 2017 and 2021 tournaments.
Having netted two goals at each of the three editions since 2017, Salah also scored during Egypt’s opening 2-2 stalemate with Mozambique at the 2023 finals, but he was sidelined for nearly all of the remainder of their journey to the last-16 due to injury.
Egypt, having joined Algeria and Ivory Coast in remaining unbeaten during World Cup qualifying, may have the advantage in the 2025 tournament being hosted in North Africa, though the home country Morocco might pose a challenge, achieving a record-extending 19th straight win in international play by defeating Comoros 2-0 in their opening match.
