Adair makes a comeback to Ireland squad for T20 World Cup
Ireland opener Ross Adair has been included in a 15-member squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup taking place in India and Sri Lanka. The former Ulster rugby athlete was initially part of Heinrich Malan’s squad for the Bangladesh tour scheduled for November but had to pull out due to a bone stress issue in his knee. His re-entry into the team means Ireland’s squad mirrors the one they had originally planned to take for the three-match series, which they ultimately lost 2-1. Adair, who boasts a T20 century against South Africa from September 2024 and maintains an average of 28.84 in this format, scored 26 and 33 in his latest international outings while opening the batting with captain Paul Stirling. During his absence against the Tigers, Tim Tector stepped into the starting line-up and achieved an average of 29 over the three matches, with a top score of 38. Ireland will compete in a group alongside Sri Lanka, Australia, Oman, and Zimbabwe at the World Cup, commencing their campaign against the hosts in Colombo on February 8. All four of their group matches will occur in Sri Lanka as the squad aims to improve on their winless performance at the tournament in the USA two years prior, which featured a surprising 12-run loss to Canada. Leading up to their opening game next month, they will engage in a series of warm-up matches against Italy three times and the UAE two times, scheduled between January 23 and 31.
