Aston Villa: Watkins praises ‘tactical mastermind’ Emery following Stamford Bridge comeback
Unai Emery’s adjustments at halftime were remarkably effective.
Ollie Watkins referred to Unai Emery as a “tactical mastermind” after Aston Villa overturned a deficit to defeat Chelsea 2-1, marking their 11th consecutive victory across all tournaments.
For much of the game at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, Villa struggled and fell behind when Reece James’ inswinging corner was deflected into the net by Joao Pedro.
The visitors had not managed to create any significant chances against Chelsea in the first half, and the persistent pressure from the Blues led Emery to make a triple substitution just before the hour mark.
Watkins, Jadon Sancho, and Amadou Onana replaced Emi Buendia, John McGinn, and Donyell Malen.
The substitutions proved to be highly effective, as Watkins equalized after connecting with a brilliant pass from Morgan Rogers, then secured the victory with a fantastic header from Youri Tielemans’ corner six minutes before regulation time concluded.
Aston Villa star Watkins applauds ‘tactical mastermind’ of Emery
This victory places Villa only three points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal ahead of their encounter with the Gunners at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday. Villa triumphed in the earlier matchup 2-1 this month.
“Amazing, amazing win,” Watkins remarked.
“Personally, for me, scoring two goals after coming on is a fantastic feeling.
“However, maintaining this winning run and overcoming Chelsea at such a challenging venue is incredible – that’s really the best way to describe it.”
When discussing Emery’s substitutions, Watkins explained: “He made the changes because Chelsea were marking man to man, but they had an extra center-back when we played long balls.
“So, when I came on in the second half, he introduced Sancho on the wing and Morgan, which I believe provided us with a bit more space.
“And then he positioned Youri in the No.10 role, giving us an additional presence up front.
“Tactical mastermind, I would say.”
