Australia’s Smith sidelined from third Test due to illness

Australian batsman Steve Smith was declared unavailable on the morning of the vital third Ashes Test against England after experiencing symptoms of nausea and lightheadedness. Usman Khawaja stepped in to fill Smith’s spot in the Australia lineup. The 36-year-old did not participate in training on Monday because of his illness, and then was struck in the groin during batting practice in the nets on Tuesday morning. A statement from Cricket Australia read: “Over the last few days he (Steve Smith) has been feeling unwell, with symptoms such as nausea and dizziness.” He was closely monitored and evaluated and was nearly ready to play. However, due to the ongoing nature of his symptoms, a choice was made not to proceed.” He is receiving treatment for a possible vestibular condition, which is something Steve has had sporadically in the past and is being managed properly. He is anticipated to return for the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.” Before the game commenced, Smith was on the outfield at the Adelaide Oval but left the venue prior to the toss. “Steve has been a bit unwell over the last couple of days,” commented Australia captain Pat Cummins. “He tried to get ready this morning, but felt he wouldn’t be able to participate. He’s gone home.” “We are fortunate to have someone like Usman who can step right in.” Khawaja, who was omitted from the Australia XI when it was announced on Tuesday, will occupy Smith’s position at number four. Australia, leading 2-0 after victories in the first two Tests, will secure the Ashes if they manage to avoid defeat in Adelaide. The hosts won the toss and opted to bat first.
