Burkina Faso 2-1 Equatorial Guinea: Overview, outcome, and goals from AFCON 2025

Burkina Faso netted goals in the 95th and 98th minutes to thwart 10-man Equatorial Guinea from producing the first major upset of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025, as both teams kicked off their group-stage journeys in remarkably thrilling fashion.

Marvin Aniebo propelled the underdogs ahead just five minutes before the end of regular time in their Group E debut, only for Georgi Minoungou’s close-range shot and Edmond Tapsoba’s header to clinch a comeback victory for The Stallions in the dying moments of the match.

Basilio Ndong was shown a red card for the National Thunder five minutes after the break for stepping on Sunderland forward Bertrand Traore’s ankle. However, the team, ranked 97th by Fifa, managed to persevere through the left-back’s dismissal and considerable pressure to take the lead against rivals who are 35 places higher before suffering a heartbreaking defeat.

Despite boasting players like Traore and £42 million Brentford’s record signing Dango Ouattara up front, Burkina Faso squandered numerous opportunities and ended up trailing for most of the match, when Aniebo expertly converted Carlos Akapo’s corner.

Earlier, a strike from Lassina Traore had been disallowed for offside after the substitute capitalized on Ouattara’s flick-on. Brama Traore’s squad might have felt that fortune had abandoned them, but the pattern of late goals in the tournament continued as they staged an incredible comeback.

Minoungou scored after Ouattara received Tapsoba’s clever pass within the box and was fouled, a situation that could have easily resulted in a penalty. Tapsoba then sealed the comeback when goalkeeper Jesus Owono mishandled a cross.

Both teams will play again on Monday, with Equatorial Guinea set to face Sudan (15:00 GMT), while Burkina Faso will take on Algeria (17:30).
