Daniele De Rossi received a heartfelt farewell during his Stadio Olimpico homecoming on Monday evening, yet he still expressed apologies to the Giallorossi supporters as he was feeling ‘upset inside’ after his Genoa team faced a 3-1 loss. Goals in the first half from Matias Soule, Manu Kone, and Evan Ferguson propelled Roma to a 3-1 triumph over Genoa at the Stadio Olimpico that night, marking De Rossi’s first match back since being let go as Giallorossi head coach in September. Jeff Ekhator managed to pull one back for the visitors in the 87th minute. You can watch how the event unfolded on the Football Italia Liveblog. (Photo by Paolo Bruno/Getty Images) De Rossi enjoyed an emotional reception at the Stadio Olimpico prior to kick-off. Paulo Dybala, Gianluca Mancini, and Kone made an effort to greet their former manager with warm hugs along the touchline just before the match commenced. However, it was the scenes at full-time that proved to be particularly emotional. De Rossi was given the opportunity to do a lap of honour, acknowledging all four stands as a moving rendition of Grazie Roma played in the background. He then approached the Curva Sud, where fans waved flags displaying his name and former shirt number, while De Rossi greeted various supporters in the stands. In an interview with DAZN following his emotional farewell, De Rossi apologized for the ‘stern expression’ he exhibited after his team’s 3-1 loss. That feeling lingers even after saying goodbye and receiving support from my fans, former fans, and previous players,” De Rossi articulated. “They would have shown the same support following a draw, a win, or a loss, but it might have felt a bit better to say farewell to them after a different showing. “I apologize for having that stern expression during the farewell, but they understand me. They realize that I have no other way to engage with football.”
