Doug Bracewell retires from all forms of cricket

New Zealand allrounder Doug Bracewell has declared his retirement from all formats of cricket. Bracewell, 35, last represented New Zealand in a Test match during 2023. A recurring rib injury, which has sidelined him for Central Districts this season, has influenced Bracewell’s choice. Throughout his career, Bracewell participated in 28 Tests, 21 ODIs, and 20 T20Is from 2011 to 2023. One of the pinnacle moments of his career occurred in only his third Test match, in Hobart in December 2011, where he achieved match figures of 9 for 60, leading New Zealand to their inaugural Test victory in Australia in 26 years; it still stands as their most recent Test triumph in the nation. Overall, Bracewell’s vigorous fast-medium bowling garnered him 74 wickets in 28 Test matches, with an average of 38.82. He also claimed 46 wickets across his white-ball outings for New Zealand. “It’s been a proud part of my life, and something I aspired to as a young cricketer,” Bracewell mentioned in a statement from Central Districts. “I will always appreciate the opportunities I have received through cricket, and the chance to represent my country, as well as for Central Districts throughout my domestic journey. It’s a privilege to have played first-class and international cricket, and I’m thankful to have enjoyed and played the game for as long as I have.” Bracewell hails from one of New Zealand’s distinguished cricketing families. His father Brendon and uncle John both participated in Test cricket, with John also serving multiple terms as New Zealand’s coach, while uncles Douglas and Mark also engaged in first-class cricket. Bracewell played two ODIs and a Test alongside his cousin Michael, who is set to captain New Zealand in the ODIs during the upcoming tour of India next month, in addition to participating in an Under-19 World Cup in 2010. In addition to his domestic cricket for Central Districts, Bracewell represented Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) in IPL 2012, Joburg Super Kings at SA20 2024, and Central Stags in the Global Super League earlier this year. Bracewell retires with the distinguished achievement of amassing over 4000 runs and claiming more than 400 wickets in New Zealand’s first-class cricket; offspinner Jeetan Patel is another player who has reached this milestone. In his 137-match first-class career, Bracewell secured 437 wickets at an average of 31.08 and scored 4505 runs at 25.45, which includes three centuries.
