FA Cup round-up: Heartbreak for non-leaguers while Birmingham and Bristol City progress after goalfests

Grimsby Town 3-2 Weston-super-Mare

Non-league team Weston-super-Mare faced disappointment as they failed to replicate Macclesfield’s earlier triumph and were defeated 3-2 by League Two side Grimsby Town.

The Step 6 club believed they had done enough to push the match into extra time, but substitute Kieran Green found the net in the 86th minute, securing Grimsby’s place in the fourth round.

Charles Vernam’s excellent long-range shot had put the Mariners ahead 1-0 just before the halftime break, but Luke Coulson equalized for the National League South side – marking their first appearance in the third round of the competition’s 138-year history.

Jaze Kabia then scored his 11th goal of the season, restoring Grimsby’s lead.

However, Weston fought back once more, with striker Louis Britton equalizing from a close position.

Yet, just as extra time seemed imminent, the hosts took the lead for a third and final time, as Green headed in from a corner.

Bristol City 5-1 Watford

Emil Riis scored a hat-trick, complemented by goals from Rob Atkinson and Anis Mehmeti, as Bristol City advanced smoothly into the next round with a 5-1 rout of Championship rivals Watford.

Riis opened the scoring in just the second minute, and Mehmeti increased the hosts’ advantage at Ashton Gate before halftime.

Defender Atkinson then added a third with a header before Riis netted twice more, sealing victory, despite Jack Grieves’ consolation goal for Watford.

Cambridge United 2-3 Birmingham City

Birmingham City managed to avoid an upset by holding on for a 3-2 win against Cambridge United, following a determined comeback from the home side.

The Blues, who are 40 places ahead of their League Two rivals, were ahead 3-0 with just 10 minutes left, thanks to first-half goals from Kai Wagner, Kyogo Furuhashi, and Marvin Ducksch.

But a late double from Cambridge’s Sulley Kaikai created an exciting finish to a match that had largely seemed secure for Birmingham.
