Fury informs Sky: ‘My comeback will be the largest and finest event of that period’

Tyson Fury has responded to Sky Sports Boxing’s Instagram account, stating that his return to the boxing ring in 2026 will be the “largest and finest event of that period,” while he shares updates on his training in Thailand. Fury revealed on Sunday that he aims to make his comeback this year, almost a year after he announced his most recent retirement from boxing. Following a second points defeat to heavyweight opponent Oleksandr Usyk for three of the four major world titles in December 2024, Fury confirmed the conclusion of his professional career the next month.

On Monday, in reply to a Sky Sports Boxing Instagram question asking, ‘Who will Fury fight in 2026?’ The 37-year-old made a comment stating: “Whoever it may be, it will be the largest & finest event of that period. As the GK (Gypsy King) returns, views and headlines are coming in. #legend”

Fury also held an Instagram Live session from Thailand where he informed his 6.7m followers: “Run completed today, feeling great. Feeling sharper, faster, more ready than I was last week. Second week of training, let’s go. Bring it on.”

Fury, who previously mentioned his retirement after defeating Dillian Whyte in April 2022 only to come back later that year, shared on Instagram on Sunday: “2026 is that year. Return of the mac. I’ve been away for a while, but I’m back now, 37 years old and still throwing punches. There’s nothing better to do than hit men in the face and earn money for it.” Fury’s pattern of retiring followed by re-entering the ring led many to doubt his latest assertion to conclude a career that has seen 34 victories in 37 bouts and a few periods as a world champion.

He was outraged by the judges’ decisions in his double losses to Usyk, the only boxer to defeat Fury, who stated in last year’s retirement announcement: “I will finish with this: Dick Turpin wore a mask.” Nevertheless, the self-described Gypsy King sparked rumors of another return during the holiday season by posting multiple training clips on his social media. Although he claimed he had retired, Fury has consistently been associated with a long-anticipated all-British matchup against Anthony Joshua, another ex-two-time world heavyweight champion.

The two had agreed to a fight in August 2021 when they both held all the major world titles, but that plan fell through when Fury was mandated to face Deontay Wilder for a third time by an arbitration ruling.

Plans were being developed for Joshua and Fury to have preliminary contests early in the year before finally squaring off against one another, potentially in late summer or towards the end of 2026. However, the car accident in Nigeria on Monday, which left Joshua injured and resulted in the deaths of two close friends and team members, has likely delayed boxing for the 36-year-old. If Joshua is unable to compete, Fury might pursue a trilogy fight against WBC, WBA, and IBF titleholder Usyk or a bout with WBO champion Fabio Wardley. A victory over either would enable Fury to join Muhammad Ali as a three-time world heavyweight champion.
