Camille Estephan of Eye of the Tiger Management states that the IBF has directed Canelo Alvarez to confront top contender Osleys Iglesias for the vacant super middleweight championship left by Terence Crawford. Jake Donovan adds that the IBF “has issued invitations to commence negotiations,” allowing both fighters three days to agree or decline. As a more astute individual might mention, this situation is heating up. Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KO) has publicly indicated that he plans to stay out of the ring until September, and even if that weren’t true, I can’t envision him challenging a high-risk, low-reward newcomer in Iglesias (14-0, 13 KO). I would wager a significant amount of American dollars that Alvarez will likely wait for the super middleweight title scenario to stabilize and then seek either an easier target like the victor of Armando Resendiz vs Edgar Berlanga or a fighter like Hamzah Sheeraz, who might entice Turki to open his wallet. Iglesias is ranked number 1 in the latest standings after defeating Vladimir Shishkin in a final eliminator, while Canelo holds the number 3 spot.
