Lazio submits official protest letter, but referees uphold disputed goal

Lazio has officially protested to the Lega Serie A regarding what they label as ongoing refereeing mistakes against them; however, the officials maintain that the disputed Udinese goal was legitimate. Following their 1-1 draw with Udinese on Saturday—where Keinan Davis found the net with the final kick of the match, seemingly after a handball in the buildup—the Aquile declared a press silence. In response to the club’s statement concerning repeated officiating errors, reports indicate that Lazio has dispatched a formal letter of protest to the Lega Serie A. Lazio’s outrage regarding the officiating continues to escalate. A clarification is expected during the next airing of the DAZN Italia television show Open VAR, where the audio and video will be shared from the officials who assessed the incident during the match. A spokesperson for the referees is anticipated to clarify that the handball by Davis was not significant enough to warrant the goal being overturned by VAR, as it occurred several seconds prior to scoring. Lazio contends that no other player had possession of the ball after it touched Davis’s arm, arguing that intent should not matter. The referees point out that under the new interpretation of the rules this season, if a player touches the ball multiple times after the handball, it no longer directly contributes to the goal.
