Man Utd now engaging in talks regarding James Garner as budget option appears

Manchester United and INEOS are reportedly initiating internal discussions about the potential signing of a Premier League player during the January transfer window.
INEOS discussing acquisition of Premier League player
It’s widely recognized that Man United is on the lookout for midfield assistance in the January transfer window, especially after Ruben Amorim has faced a series of injuries in recent times. Currently, Amorim is without Bruno Fernandes due to an untimely injury and is relying on the inconsistent Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo, alongside the veteran Casemiro. In pursuit of Champions League qualification, it would be an understatement to say those options are less than satisfactory.

Man United is contemplating an offer for a former centre-back target in 2026.

With the winter transfer window approaching, INEOS is actively assessing their options. They have reportedly focused on Ruben Neves, Adam Wharton, and a few others. Neves has particularly caught attention recently, as he aims to return to the Premier League. If a way can be found around his lucrative Saudi contract, he would undoubtedly present a promising answer to Man United’s issues.

There are also concerns regarding Mainoo’s future. The Carrington academy graduate has had little playing time since Amorim’s arrival, and following his brother’s appearance in a “free Kobbie Mainoo” T-shirt at Old Trafford, numerous exit rumors have surfaced. Reports indicate that clubs such as Chelsea and Bayern Munich have shown interest in Mainoo, though it remains unclear if Amorim will block a potential transfer. Should he depart, James Garner may come into play as a viable option. According to the Daily Mail, INEOS is currently exploring the possibility of acquiring Garner from Everton next month.
Man Utd could secure a cost-effective deal for Garner
Amid speculations that INEOS might invest heavily next year, Garner stands out as a cost-effective option. The Everton player is approaching the final six months of his existing contract with the club and could potentially leave as a free agent. This situation means the Toffees might only have one last opportunity to profit from their midfielder in January, which may enable United to present a lower-cost offer to their advantage.

The challenge for United lies in Everton’s efforts to persuade the Carrington graduate to extend his contract with the team, and manager David Moyes has been vocal about his admiration for Garner.

The experienced manager commented to reporters earlier this season: “He’s been excellent since my arrival. I underestimated how talented he is. He has performed remarkably. “He’s excelled in midfield and has also played full-back for me. I’ve mentioned a few times that he’s possibly getting closer to being talked about for the England squad due to his performances. “Of course, England boasts many outstanding players to choose from, so selecting a team is challenging. I’ve been involved in conversations all week regarding (Phil) Foden and (Jude) Bellingham, but all I’m saying is Jimmy is among the young English midfield talents who might have a chance of being called up in the future.”
