Manchester City clarify details surrounding Josko Gvardiol’s injury

This poses a significant challenge for Pep Guardiola.

Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol is scheduled for surgery after the club confirmed he will need an operation on an injury sustained against Chelsea.

City disclosed on Monday that Gvardiol experienced a tibial fracture during the 1-1 draw with the Blues, a match result that positioned them six points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal.

The duration of Gvardiol’s time away from the pitch remains uncertain, with the City statement noting: “The defender will undergo surgery later this week and evaluation is ongoing to determine the complete extent of the injury and anticipated prognosis.”

Gvardiol has appeared in 23 matches for City this season, with the Croatia international netting twice and providing four assists.

Manchester City may pursue Guehi transfer

With Ruben Dias also sustaining an injury against Chelsea and John Stones already unavailable, City is reportedly intensifying their interest in Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

City was believed to be waiting to determine the full severity of the injuries to Gvardiol and Dias prior to deciding whether to target Guehi.

Yet, the confirmation regarding the nature of Gvardiol’s injury, who has versatility as both a centre-back and a full-back, might prompt them to act swiftly.

Guehi was on the verge of signing with Liverpool on the previous window’s deadline day, only for the transfer to fall through due to Palace’s failure to secure a replacement for the England international.

However, since Guehi’s contract expires at the end of the season, the Eagles may now be inclined to cash in rather than losing him for free.

City will face Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League on Wednesday as they aim to apply pressure on Arsenal ahead of the Gunners’ match against Liverpool on Thursday.
