As a result of their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory, Mozambique secured a spot in the last 16 with a match still to play after defeating Gabon in their second outing at the 2025 tournament.
The team holding the 102nd position globally is set to face a formidable challenge in their last-16 match against Nigeria in Fez on Monday (19:00 GMT), unless they manage to overcome five-time champions Cameroon in their final group-stage encounter. “I must admit, I didn’t do any calculations,” stated Pagou, who stepped in at the start of this month.
“We are focused on our own progress and have no idea who might be advancing (in the knockout stage). We recognize that Mozambique is a very intricate and challenging opponent.”

Junior Tchamadeu delivered the shot that deflected off Ghislain Konan, resulting in an own goal that secured Cameroon a point against Ivory Coast. However, the Stoke City right-back will miss the match against Cameroon due to accumulated yellow cards.
Pagou, who is missing midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa for the entirety of the tournament due to an injury, may consider rotating his lineup with the pressure to qualify lifted, as might his counterpart Conde.
