The former three-division champion, unbeaten Japanese southpaw Junto Nakatani (32-0, 24KOs), 121.6, faced considerable difficulty against unbeaten Mexican contender Sebastian Hernandez (20-1, 18 KOs), 120.8, and narrowly secured a controversial unanimous decision (115-113 twice, 118-110) after twelve intense rounds on Saturday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This fight was intended as a tune-up for Nakatani ahead of his much-anticipated clash with undisputed world super bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue. However, Nakatani’s performance fell short of expectations as he found it challenging to manage the relentless pressure from the determined Mexican Hernandez. This journalist scored the bout 114-114, noting Hernandez’s aggressive display in the latter rounds. Nakatani suffered a severely swollen right eye, marking this as the toughest contest of his career.
