Iconic OGC Nice eagle mascot and trainer drenched by sprinkler
In the realm of football, few mascots are as recognizable as Mefi – the eagle representing OGC Nice, which reflects the club’s emblem and showcases an impressive aerial display around the Allianz Riviera prior to kick-off. This spectacle was once again featured before Nice’s Europa League match against AS Roma on Thursday; however, what was meant to be a demonstration of strength and pride quickly transformed into a more amusing incident. As Mefi descended toward her trainer, who was about to reward her with a treat, one of the pitch’s sprinklers unexpectedly activated at full capacity. Both the eagle and the trainer were quickly drenched, the water jets bursting forth with such intensity that the trainer had to hurriedly remove his soaked in-ear headphones. Surprisingly, Mefi herself showed no distress from the unanticipated drenching, proceeding with her routine gracefully – although it’s reasonable to speculate that the eagle did not appreciate the poorly timed shower. The incident sparked plenty of laughter; however, for Franck Haise’s team, the evening only worsened from that point. Nice suffered a 2-1 loss against Roma, with owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe in attendance – his INEOS group also owns Manchester United. Just as Mefi’s pre-game routine faltered, so did Nice’s, leaving the home fans soaked in disappointment instead of joy.
