O’Neill thrilled with Celtic victory following ‘strange old week’

Celtic’s interim manager Martin O’Neill expressed his happiness after his team secured a 4-0 victory over Dundee United following a “strange old week” at the club. This marked the second occasion in which O’Neill stepped into the interim position after Wilfried Nancy was dismissed on Monday, just 33 days into his tenure.
The Bhoys quickly regained their momentum under O’Neill, with Yang Hyun-jun netting the first goal in the 27th minute, followed shortly by Arne Engels who extended their lead.
Benjamin Nygren and Daizen Maeda each scored within a span of six minutes in the second half, both players capitalizing on quick rebounds in the penalty area. O’Neill has now triumphed in all six of his Scottish Premiership matches this season, and he has also won all 20 encounters against Dundee United overall—the longest winning streak by any Celtic manager against a single opponent.
With Celtic now sitting three points behind league leaders Hearts, O’Neill was glad to witness the fans rallying behind the players. “It was delightful. We played really well in the game and in the end we won quite convincingly,” O’Neill told BBC Scotland.

“You still have to score the first goal in the game, Yang takes it magnificently and we get up and running. The performance was really good. “The players have to do the playing and it’s been a strange old week. I’ve come back in again, perhaps to haunt them as much as anything else, but the players did brilliantly, absolutely brilliantly. It’s a boost of confidence as much as anything else. “The crowd were magnificent. Even in moments when we were poor, they kept with us. Today was great, there was a nice atmosphere. “Now, being in a dog fight for the championship, we need the crowd behind us. “Today, it was all about winning the game, but the performance was terrific. I don’t think I should overlook that. “We played really well, got some confidence back again and it was just lovely to win.”
