LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Director Rob Reiner and his partner, Michele Singer, were found dead at their home in Los Angeles on Sunday, according to a family announcement.

High-ranking officials from law enforcement told ABC News that the couple sustained lethal stab wounds at their residence in the Brentwood area.

“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the heartbreaking news of Michele and Rob Reiner’s untimely passing. This unexpected loss has brought us immense sorrow, and we request privacy as we deal with this incredibly difficult time,” the Reiner family expressed.

At a press briefing on Sunday night, authorities confirmed that a suspect has not yet been pinpointed and no apprehensions have occurred.

“This is an intensely painful loss for our city and our nation,” commented Mayor Karen Bass in a statement. “Rob Reiner’s legacy permeates American culture and society, and his artistic contributions and commitment to social and economic justice have touched the lives of many.”

The Los Angeles Fire Department reported that emergency responders arrived at 3:38 p.m. due to a medical assistance request at a property on the 250 block of Chadbourne Avenue. Initially, the victims were identified only as a man and a woman aged 78 and 68, respectively.

Authorities initiated a death investigation that subsequently transitioned into a murder investigation, according to LAPD sources who spoke with ABC News, noting that property records verify the home as belonging to Reiner.

The inquiry is being conducted by the LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division, which also saw the department’s top officials respond to the site.

Rob Reiner, who followed in the footsteps of his father, a comedic icon, became a renowned filmmaker with classic films like “The Princess Bride,” “When Harry Met Sally …” and “This Is Spinal Tap,” has passed away.

A nearby resident mentioned that actors Billy Crystal and Larry David arrived separately at the house on Sunday evening. The two comedians stayed for a brief period before departing, with Crystal seeming visibly shaken, as reported by the neighbor.

The Reiner family possesses two homes directly across from each other. Rob and his wife lived in one, while another daughter and her children occupied the other, according to the neighbor.

As the child of comedy legend Carl Reiner and vocalist Estelle Lebost, Rob Reiner is celebrated for his significant achievements in Hollywood, producing films such as “The Princess Bride,” “When Harry Met Sally…,” “Stand By Me,” “This is Spinal Tap,” and more.

Rob Reiner first achieved fame through his role in the Norman Lear sitcom “All in the Family.”

“The Lear family is devastated by the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner,” they said in a statement made public on Sunday night. “Norman always viewed Rob as a son, and their bond was extraordinary, both to us and to the world.”

“Lyn Lear expressed a heartfelt connection with them, saying, ‘Tonight, the world seems undeniably dimmer, and we are left feeling bereft,'” the statement continued.

California Governor Gavin Newsom addressed Reiner’s death, expressing that he is “devastated by this tragic loss.”

As the news of the killings of director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer, circulated, fans in Hollywood mourned the couple’s demise.

“His boundless empathy made his stories timeless, educating generations on recognizing the goodness in one another and urging us to aspire for greatness,” Newsom remarked. “Rob will be remembered for his incredible contributions to cinema and his exceptional influence on humanity.”

Reiner and Singer got married in 1989 and had three children together: Jake, Nick, and Romy.

Rob Reiner was previously married to actor-director Penny Marshall from 1971 to 1981. He adopted her daughter, Tracy Reiner. Carl Reiner passed away in 2020 at the age of 98, and Marshall passed in 2018.
