Floodlight malfunction and adverse weather impede Super Kings and Royals in SA20

Image source, Getty ImagesEnglish bowlers Luke Wood and Jamie Overton shone as Adelaide Strikers triumphed over Sydney Thunder by six runs in the Big Bash League. Overton claimed figures of 3-25, helping Adelaide defend a total of 165-8 after dismissing Matthew Gilkes for 43, cutting short a perilous 73-run opening partnership with David Warner. The Thunder lost both Sam Billings and Sam Konstas for just one and two runs, respectively, but Warner steadied the innings with Nic Maddinson, contributing 44 runs for the fourth wicket. Overton, who alongside Wood has been included in England’s squad for February’s T20 World Cup, returned to break that partnership by bowling Maddinson for 21. He then had his fellow countryman David Willey caught by Matthew Short for eight in the penultimate over. The unbeaten Warner, scoring 66 from 47 deliveries, remained on strike in the final over, with Thunder needing 13 runs to clinch victory. However, the wicketless Wood exhibited exceptional death bowling skills to secure a win for the home team. His initial three deliveries were dot balls, and Warner could only manage a single from his fourth. Nathan McAndrew managed an edged four from the fifth ball, leaving the tailender needing a six off Wood’s final delivery to achieve victory, but he could only secure a single, as the Thunder finished at 159-7. Adelaide managed to recover from 19-2 after being put to bat, with Mackenzie Harvey (38) and Jason Sangha (31) adding 68 runs for the third wicket. Both players fell in quick succession, with Harvey dismissed by Ashton Agar (3-16), but all-rounder Liam Scott’s unbeaten 49 ensured Adelaide had a competitive score to defend. Thunder’s sixth loss in seven matches keeps them firmly at the bottom of the standings, eliminating their chances of reaching the playoffs. In contrast, Adelaide climbed one position to fifth with a record of three wins and three defeats.
