Former Leeds legend Terry Yorath – father of TV presenter Gabby – passes away at 75

Terry Yorath, the former Wales international, has passed away at the age of 75, as confirmed by his family this morning.

Born in Cardiff, Yorath earned 59 caps for Wales and is primarily remembered for his impactful tenure at Leeds, where he made 199 appearances and was pivotal in the club’s First Division title win in 1974.

His daughter Gabby was pulled away from her role presenting BBC Match of the Day last night, with replacement Mark Chapman indicating she had to attend to a “family emergency.”

Yorath was described as a ‘quiet, kind and gentle man’

Gabby was one of four siblings, including Louise, Jordan, and Daniel, who sadly passed away at the age of 15 due to a heart issue while playing football at home with his father.

A statement from the children expressed: “To many, he was a celebrated footballing legend, but to us, he was simply dad; a quiet, kind and gentle man. Our hearts are shattered, but we find solace knowing he will be reunited with our brother, Daniel.”

Leeds stated this morning, “Everyone at Leeds United is heartbroken to learn about the loss of club icon Terry Yorath.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to Terry’s family, friends, and former teammates during this extremely tragic moment. Rest in peace, Terry.”

Involved in the Valley Parade tragedy

Following his time at Elland Road, Yorath played for Coventry, Tottenham, Vancouver, Bradford, and Swansea before transitioning into coaching.

He served as assistant coach at Bradford on the day of the tragic fire at Valley Parade that claimed the lives of 56 fans in 1985.

Yorath managed the Wales national team from 1988 to 1993 and came close to guiding them to their first World Cup finals since 1958.
