‘I chose this’: Shakur Stevenson views Teofimo Lopez as a valuable challenge

Shakur Stevenson takes a moment to talk about his forthcoming junior welterweight title bout with Teofimo Lopez, how it was arranged, and why he feels this will be his genuine breakout event. Shakur is already recognized as one of the most skilled technical boxers in the sport today, but he aims to enhance his reputation further with this matchup against Teofimo. Here’s some of what he shared below.
Shakur on setting up a fight with Teofimo
“I actually organized this fight, and I genuinely did it because I want to push myself. I recognize Teo as an exceptional fighter; he competes at a very high level. I believe I can defeat him, but I also understand that this will present a formidable challenge, so I’m prepared.”
On the other options he considered
“Lamont Roach…(Teofimo has the) bigger name and holds more accolades. He has been undisputed before and has won titles at 130 and 40. He’s simply more accomplished, so I understand that this will enhance my resume significantly.
(People) are certainly entitled to their views (that this will be a challenging fight for me). I’m aware of this guy’s skills; I’ve grown up in the amateurs alongside him. I opted for this fight for that reason. I selected it because I wanted to push my limits. I aim to place myself in a scenario where I can elevate my game to a higher level, so that was my primary intention.”
On any apprehensions about competing in Teofimo’s home territory of New York
“He’s not really from New York. While he may have been born there, being from New York is about being raised and nurtured here. I’ve known him for many years, and he’s always been based out of Florida. That’s where he’s really from, Florida. So, I don’t see him as a New York fighter.
But should I be dominant? I believe in every fight I prepare for, I strive to dominate. Regardless of who stands in front of me, I want to establish control. I aim to perform in a way that judges feel they can’t rob me.”
On what a victory over Teofimo would mean for his career
“I believe it places me top five pound-for-pound. I think it ranks me as one of the finest fighters of my era. I think it just confirms that I’m that guy.”
