Tottenham probe Omar Marmoush as potential Brennan Johnson substitute

Tottenham has made inquiries regarding a promising attacker while also expressing interest in Manchester City winger Savinho.
Spurs prepare alternatives for Johnson and Tel
Brennan Johnson has completed his £35million transfer from Tottenham to Crystal Palace. The 24-year-old Wales international has penned a four-and-a-half year contract at Selhurst Park. Johnson, who lost his position under Thomas Frank at Spurs despite being the north London team’s leading scorer last season, is slated to debut for Palace in their Premier League clash against Newcastle at St James’ Park on Sunday. Mathys Tel might also depart the Lilywhites, having slipped down the hierarchy under the former Brentford manager, which reportedly has created a conflict between the two.

Spurs plan to allow Tel to move out on loan amid interest from Galatasaray and have been connected with Savinho as a potential substitute for the departing duo. The Brazilian has struggled for playing time at the Etihad due to the performances of Phil Foden, Jeremy Doku, and Rayan Cherki, and with his position at Manchester now in jeopardy, he could also lose his next transfer to one of his own teammates.

Spurs targeting Omar Marmoush in January
Indeed, as per TeamTalk, Tottenham has made inquiries about the status of another City star, Omar Marmoush, who is also garnering attention from Aston Villa. Manchester City has shown no willingness to part with the Egypt international mid-season, so it will be intriguing to see how earnestly Spurs attempt to challenge their stance, just one year after his £63m transfer from Eintracht Frankfurt (including add-ons).

The winger/forward is currently participating in AFCON, where he has netted once as the Pharaohs topped their group, but various form and fitness challenges have impeded his effectiveness at City this season. Nonetheless, the statistics present a more favorable view for Marmoush compared to Savinho, as the former Frankfurt player averages 0.46 non-penalty goals per 90 over the last 365 days.

On the other hand, Savinho has only managed 0.05 per 90, which is over 800 percent lower than his City counterpart and ranks him in the bottom two percent among all attacking midfielders/wingers in the top five European leagues. Pep Guardiola has commended Marmoush earlier this year, providing some insight into his potential contributions to Tottenham’s offense.

“He arrived in the middle of the season and in a moment when we are not good.
“Sometimes when you come when everything is fluid and everything is fine it’s easy to adapt.
“But coming when the team is not playing well, that is a significant credit.
“When a team wants to gain possession, he makes runs and comprehends the intensity required for play.”

Marmoush’s contract with City runs until the summer of 2029.
