WBO mandates Hamzah Sheeraz vs Diego Pacheco for vacant super middleweight championship

The super middleweight division is gradually coming to life post-Crawford, as the WBO has instructed Hamzah Sheeraz to battle Diego Pacheco for the now-available title. Both fighters have a 20-day window to negotiate terms. This matchup is intriguing, considering both are among the taller competitors in the division, though it seems unlikely to happen. Sheeraz (22-0-1, 18 KO), who rebounded from a disappointing draw with Carlos Adames by defeating Edgar Berlanga in July, also has a WBC title opportunity lined up against Christian Mbilli that may be simpler to arrange. The fight between Sheeraz and Pacheco (25-0, 18 KO) would necessitate cooperation between Matchroom and Queensberry or lead to a purse bid, whereas the management teams for Mbilli (Top Rank and Eye of the Tiger) have a historically strong rapport with Frank Warren. As of last week, Sheeraz is positioned at no. 3 in the ranks, trailing the currently inactive Canelo Alvarez at no. 1 and Pacheco at no. 2. Denmark’s Jacob Bank (17-0, 9 KO) holds the no. 4 spot; the 24-year-old recently achieved a knockout over Tyron Zeuge in September and is set to face our familiar friend William Scull next month in his hometown of Kolding.
